Mikrosil Casting Kits
Two easy-to-use tubes, mixing pad and wooden spatula are included in each kit. The large tube contains the putty and the small one contains the catalyst. Each kit will do several castings. Full instructions are provided with each kit.
For best results, it is recommended that each kit be used within one year of purchase. Avoid exposing the catalyst to air. Place the cap back on the tube as soon as you are finished.*
Technical Note
Mikrosil has been formulated to give excellent rendering of small details, highest contrast for microscopic observations, good releasing ability for the cast and short setting-time. These properties are important in cases of shallow marks and marks with small details requiring large magnification.
Brown Mikrosil is a dark-brown color which many toolmark examiners prefer. The dark color increases the visibility of detail in the casts made from toolmarks, firing pin marks, breech face marks and other marks on cartridge casings.
Gray Mikrosil is preferred by other toolmark examiners who photograph the contrast between the light-colored surface and shadows produced from side-lighting.
White or Black Mikrosil can be used to lift dusted latent fingerprints from rough or textured surfaces where regular lift tape will fail.
Use White Mikrosil with black powders and use Black Mikrosil with silver or fluorescent powders.
Casting Tool marks:If you use Brown or Gray MIKROSIL you'll obtain an excellent result. MIKROSIL is designed by a criminalist for criminalists. It has been formulated to give the best rendering of small details, highest contrast for microscopical observations, good releasing and short setting time even in cold weather. These properties are of special importance, in cases of very shallow marks and with small details, requiring large magnification.
Lifting fingerprints and shoeprints:The use of White or Black MIKROSIL for this type of evidence can sometimes be the best and outstanding method. All crime scene investigators have had to deal with the situation of trying to lift a latent print from an object with a textured surface or a relief pattern. Usually, a latent print would be lifted with adhesive tape, but on textured surface, the tape does not adhere well. The powdered print will be on the raised parts where the tape adheres well and on the lower parts of the surface where the tape will not make good contact, if any at all. If you use MIKROSIL, White for dark powder and Black for light and fluorescent powder, to lift this type of prints, you will not have any problems - all parts of the print will be lifted. Even powdered shoeprints can be lifted with MIKROSIL. The picture shows a shoeprint lifted with White MIKROSIL and the suspected shoe.
