Ultraviolet light sources can be used to visualize several types of physical evidence. Body fluids, such as semen, saliva, and urine, will fluoresce under the ultraviolet light source. Latent prints, footwear marks and clothing fibers may also fluoresce for easy detection. When paper fibers are disturbed by erasure, UV light can show the disruption. Bodies can be examined for bruising, bite marks, fibers, hairs, ligature marks and body fluid deposits. Short wavelenght UV lamps are used for sterilization, chromatography, mineralogy and photochemical reactions, such as silver nitrate development of latent prints and trace metal detection.
