Ice rescue equipment and gear for Ice Training Drills. Ice rescuers need practice basic ice rescue skills, such as crawling out on the ice to a victim with the use of ice awls or picks, self rescue, solo rescue (one rescuer/one victim) and two man rescues with the use of a Marsars sled and other rescue devices. Ice rescuers will operate manually pulled tether lines pulling both the victim and the rescuer from the break in the ice back to a shoreline. Tether operators must know which safety lines are connected to the victim and which ones are attached to the rescuer. Commonly, different colored safety ropes are used for this reason. They must also know how to operate and utilize all equipment used in surface ice rescue. Awareness-level duties and responsibilities include; communication, line tending, ice formation principles, types of cold stress and hypothermia, the processes of heat and fluid loss, affects of repeated exposure to cold and first aid practices.
