The Ruth Lee Pool Rescue Manikin is designed and tested to create realistic buoyancy. It won’t sink but is still buoyant enough to easily float when towed during training. The manikin feels like an unconscious person in the water. It works as a much more realistic challenge when compared with using live volunteers who would subconsciously assist a trainee. There is no need to use volunteers and therefore, chances of an injury are minimal. It is made of reinforced nylon mesh that lets water ingress, which means that it will sink when put in water.

It helps trainers spot the weakness in the performance such as slow towing. The legs of the manikin will start sinking if the speed is not consistently maintained. Its arms are flexible and have strong webbing reinforcement that allows them to be raised aloft. This helps lifeguards practice hauling a victim from the water using the right lifting technique. There is no need to switch from a plastic torso dummy to a real volunteer partway through the training. It can be pulled from the bottom of a pool or towed to the side and recovered from the water for much more realistic and effective training.
